Introduction
The University of Aberdeen's Leadership in
Professional Settings framework is designed for those involved in
the delivery of Children’s Services who are interested in developing
their leadership and management skills.
A menu of university-based modules will encourage
participants to engage in leadership development opportunities
provided by local authorities and other employers. The University
modules combine theoretical study with practical application in a
participant’s own professional settings. Courses are suitable for
participants who work in Scotland, the UK and overseas settings.
Flexibility is the key feature of the framework.

Entry Levels
Please note that some
modules are still in development; click on the links below to see
more information about the modules which are currently available.
There are three levels of entry:
First entry level - Emerging and Applying
Leadership:
Open to any participant who has access to a working environment in
which they will be able to
engage in meaningful development processes. This level is
appropriate for those with limited
experience of leadership.
Second entry level - Integrating Leadership:
Suitable for candidates who have some experience of leading and
managing change within their
work-based setting.

Third level entry - Innovating Leadership:
Candidates should have at least five years work-based experience
and be able to provide evidence of successfully leading a range of
improvement initiatives.
The above course
will only be open to students who have gained at least 120 credits through study
or
Accreditation of Prior Learning or who can evidence experience of leading in
their particular work
setting and who can demonstrate that they have developed and maintained a CPD
portfolio which
contains evidence of leadership activity.

Intended Outcomes
This programme will
enable participants to demonstrate:

advanced
knowledge and critical understanding of the key perspectives and concepts
associated with leadership and management in public sector settings

critical
awareness of cross-disciplinary issues
-
capacity to
plan and undertake sustained work-based enquiry and development.

reflection aimed at analysis and evaluation, and professional action
intended
to improve practice

capacity to
deal with uncertainty and complexity
-
appropriate use
of communication, numeracy and ICT skills

initiative and
creativity in problem-solving in their own professional setting

and generate research evidence to enhance practice

Qualification
The qualification
can be achieved at three stages of credit:
Certificate ( 60 credits)
Diploma and (120 credits)
Masters level (180 credits) (all at SCQF Level 11).

Alternative route to the Scottish Qualification for Headship (SQH)
Subject to formal approval and accreditation by the GTCS, elements of the MSc
programme will
enable participants to demonstrate competence against the Standard for Headship.
All Scottish participants will require to have the endorsement of the employing
Local Authority to
gain the SQH qualification.

Funding & Applications
The CPD (Schools) Team has set aside funding to
support a limited number of people from Aberdeen City schools in
studying one or more of the above modules.
If you are interested in registering to study one
of the currently available modules, you should in the first instance
complete an Award
Bearing Course Application (ABC1) Form, and send it to the CPD
(Schools) Team at Summerhill.
When you have received confirmation of
sponsorship, you should then complete the University's
Application Form and
Choice of Module/Venue Form, and return these to the University.
Please note that Local Authority sponsorship can only be
granted on a module by module basis; if you are provided
with sponsorship to study a module there is no guarantee that we
will be in a position to sponsor you to study any subsequent
modules. Separate applications must be made for each subsequent
module studied.
If you have previously completed one or more
modules in this programme, and would like to apply for sponsorship
to study an additional module, you should complete an
Application for
Continued Sponsorship (ABC2) Form, and send it to the CPD
(Schools) Team at Summerhill.

sharing session for the Leadership in Professional Settings Programme, and also
the Chartered Teacher Programme, is to be held at Summerhill Centre in January
(date to be confirmed). The Directors of
both programmes from Aberdeen University will attend the session to present
information for anyone interested in pursuing either of these opportunities,

Leadership in Professional Settings programme. Hugh is available to

in this capacity.
