Study Visit to Israel

LTS has organised a group study visit to Israel, based at the International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential in Jerusalem, to explore in detail the key principles and practice of Feuerstein's 'Instrumental Enrichment' theory. This has been arranged in partnership with Scottish Borders Council, and will be facilitated by one of their staff who is a fully-trained IE practitioner.

Participants will hear how IE helps young people with additional needs such as autism and ADHD, and young learners generally, improve their learning.

The visit will take place in mid February 2009, so we're open for applications immediately. The closing date is 19th December 2008, so that we can let people know the outcome before Christmas and make the flight and hotel bookings.

Full details are on the web as usual, plus the Jerusalem application form.

Two new SCIPD group study visits are now open for applications.
Following highly successful group study visits last year, LTS isorganising new group visits to Ontario, Canada, and to Santa Cruz, USA. Both will take place from Monday 13 to Friday 17 October 2008.

The central theme of the Ontario visit will be School Leadership across the Elementary (Primary) and High School sectors. This study visit is likely to be of interest and relevance to holders of senior leadership posts in Scottish schools, or to those currently aspiring to such posts.

The central theme of the Santa Cruz visit will be Mentoring teachers, and the group's study visit will be organised through the New Teacher Center at University of California, Santa Cruz. This study visit is likely to be of interest and relevance to those already in posts that demand mentoring skills or those interested in developing mentoring skills.

The closing date for applications for both visits is Friday 30 May 2008.

Fuller details of both visits are on the website now, along with the specific Application forms for each visit.

Confucius Classroom

Confucius Classroom

Aberdeen City has been successful in gaining one of the first four Confucius Classrooms in Scotland.

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education, addressed an invited audience at the celebration of the launch of the Confucius Classrooms at Perth High School on 20th March 2008.  She announced that a series of special units designed to boost Scotland's links with China are to be opened in schools across the country.  There are to be eight altogether by the end of the year.

The Confucius Classrooms aim to give pupils lessons in Chinese language and culture. They will also be used to organise trips to China and develop links with Chinese people living in Scotland.

Bernard McLeary, chief executive of Learning and Teaching Scotland, said it was important for children to be outward-looking and have a sense of the wider world.

Aberdeen City’s proposal for a Confucius Classroom in Aberdeen was based on the classroom being a hub for the surrounding councils of Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus.  Discussion are now taking place to determine the nature of our hub and how it will function.

For more information please contact Rosaleen Rentoul, International Education Coordinator, ext 3095.

Scottish Continuing International Professional Development

Two Study Visit Opportunities are detailed below.

1. Brussels - European Union

International opportunities for teachers and pupils

The attached leaflet has been developed by the Scottish Government, British Council (Scotland) and Learning and Teaching Scotland to provide information on available international opportunities for teachers and pupils to learn from international experiences. International Education enables young people to develop a knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland's place in it. The opportunities set out in this leaflet will provide schools with valuable learning experiences and support teachers continuing professional development.
