Great
Plant Hunt
There’s never been a better time to
get involved in
The Great Plant Hunt and enjoy fun and free educational
activities in the classroom, online and outdoors. There are plenty
of things to see and do now or you can plan the project into your
spring and summer term activities. The project is clearly linked to
the national curriculum and can be used as a resource to link your
teaching to the theme of ‘Earth’ for National Science and
Engineering Week (12-21 March 2010) and the International Year of
Biodiversity in 2010.

Flood-Aware Competition
Next
May, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency opens its new
eco-designed office, Inverdee House in Aberdeen. To celebrate the
opening of this innovative new building SEPA are launching an
exciting competition for all school pupils attending Aberdeen City
schools.
We want you to create a multimedia presentation, of five minutes or
less, aimed at making Scotland flood-aware. Working in groups you
will first need to find out about how flooding affects Scotland and
then decide on a format for your presentation. It could take the
form of a filmed documentary or perhaps you may prefer to produce a
piece of animation or a musical performance - it's up to you.
Entries will be judged on their originality, their message and the
impact of the presentation.
The two winning entries - one primary and one secondary school -
will receive a £100 Amazon voucher for their school; a visit from
SEPA to talk to their class about protecting the environment, as
well as a prize for every pupil in the winning class. Their
presentations will be shown at the launch of Inverdee House in Torry
in May 2010 and at various SEPA road shows throughout the year.
To get you started, visit our Floodline Kids website
http://apps.sepa.org.uk/floodlinekids/ for lots of useful
information on the causes and effects of flooding and some fun games
to play.
Closing date for entries is 27 March 2010. Further information
here.
Application forms are available
here.
Full details on how to submit your entry along with further
suggestions for presentation ideas are available in the teachers'
notes.

As most of you will
be aware, the upgrade to Easymail has had some problems.
It now appears that these problems
have been resolved. Details of any remaining issues are
here.
One change that you may wish to
take into account is that a user with a Normal template no longer
has a 'forward' or 'reply to all' button. This is only available on
the Advanced template. Templates can be changed by the person with
the admin login to Easymail in your school

Free EU Resources
The 'EU in slides' is a new product
published by DG COMM. It is a choice of PP
slides outlining the basics of what the EU
is and how it works. They are intended as a
flexible aid for teachers and others to give
presentations and speeches about the EU.
Users can easily combine these slides with
their own slides. They are open for editing,
so any of our multipliers can re-use
illustrations, graphs or the template.

Proposals for new structure
Dear Colleagues
Please find below draft structure proposals
for consultation. You will note that these
proposals are at strategic level and give an
indication of the proposed shape of the new
directorates. The models shown are a 5
director model and a 6 director model. I
have discussed this with Trades Union
colleagues who know that this information is
being posted on the Zone today (04 Feb 09).
I have taken account of the views expressed
to me through staff briefings, the survey,
and on an ad hoc basis by staff and I hope
that you find that these proposals reflect
your views so far.
I would be grateful if you could remit any
comments back to either your directors or to
me directly by email or in writing and of
course you can make your comments known via
your TU rep if you prefer.
Thank you
Sue Bruce
