In an international situation that is constantly changing, everyone involved in bringing up children and young people has even greater responsibilities and challenges than before.

Children and young people often have a high level of concern about international events such as the troubles in Northern Ireland, 9/11, the war in Iraq, bombings in Spain, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Bali and the UK.  Such events lead many young people to ask searching questions which parents, teachers and community learning staff have to deal with.

Such questions include

  • Could something bad happen to me or my family?

  • Why should we believe in religion when such bad things happen because of it?

Youngsters are also more aware of natural disasters such as tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods, because of high profile media coverage.  Such events lead to similar questions.
