CONFIDENCE TO LEARN: A GUIDE TO EXTENDING HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Summary of contents

Section 1 - Setting the Scene

This section sets out the main themes of the book

  • The importance of a health education programme planned around core skills and competencies as well as information.
  • A programme which starts with the children's knowledge, understanding and misunderstandings and the language with which they communicate all this. One which sees skill development as the core of the programme, and understands the critical importance of revisiting and reworking skills and information in increasingly demanding ways as the children move through primary school.
  • The importance of feelings and relationships as children try to achieve a greater capacity for healthy living and learning.

Section 2 - Getting Going

This section then offers three illuminative research strategies to enable you to plan a programme

Section 3 - Developing the Skills
In this section we focus on the spiral of skills which are key to your health education programme and how they can be introduced, practised and extended.

Section 4 - Evaluating the Learning
In this section we look at ways of monitoring and evaluating the children's learning.

Section 5 - A Whole School Approach

In this section we look at ways forward in becoming a more health promoting school.
