ABERDEEN GUIDANCE NETWORK
MINUTES 7 MAY 1999

Careers in the Arts Jackie McKay, Arts Coordinator gave lots of useful and interesting information about bursaries, courses and educational opportunities in the performing arts. Jackie agreed to provide a handout for guidance staff summarising the information which would be useful when helping young people to plan for their future education.
2 The role of Educational Psychologists Linda McHardie outlined the rationale for the way psychologists operate in relation to schools. This is the third year of gradually introducing a consultancy model for the way in which they work with schools.

The model is intended to support Aberdeen City's policies on inclusion, equity and early intervention.

Over the years it has been recognised that the referral- and crisis-driven system with its emphasis on psychometric testing, which led to the psychologist being expected to provide a "solution" did not work well in many instances, and both schools and educational psychologists became critical of it.

The consultation model is focused on a team approach to problem solving which is proactive and preventive.

3 attendance procedures Terry distributed a paper which collated submissions from various schools related to the difficulties they were experiencing with the procedures for dealing with absence.

There was some question as to whether the revised procedures were effective and it was agreed to invite the Assistant Director responsible to a future meeting to discuss matters further.

4 visit to Curriculum Resources and Information Service (CRIS) Participants made a brief guided visit to CRIS to see facilities available, and were able to view an excellent PSE resources exhibition arranged by CRIS.
5 staff development needs for 1999-2000 Ideas suggested for inclusion in the inservice programme for 1999-2000 included
  • inservice on certification of core skills
  • drug and alcohol education
  • a series of courses on resources in PSE for different year groups (perhaps a sharing among schools)
6 targets and plan for Aberdeen Guidance Network It was agreed that Terry, Sandra Mojsiewicz and Duncan Innes would produce a short paper with a suggested development plan for the Network for 1999-2000 and circulate it to guidance teams for comment. This would include how the allocated development days could be used for the development of guidance in Aberdeen.
7 miscellaneous brief issues  Terry briefly mentioned
  • the briefing on work experience on 24 May 1999
  • the Aberdeen City paper Dealing with Traumatic Incidents in Schools
8 AOCB The issue was raised as to whether the same guidance teacher should attend each network meeting or whether it was OK for a different person to attend each meeting. It was decided that this should remain up to each individual school.
