EUROPE DAY

THEME ‘WORLD CUP GERMANY 2006’

As in past years, there will be a competition with prize giving to celebrate Europe Day on 9th May 2006. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and develop our European links.

The theme of this year’s competition is ‘World Cup Germany 2006’. The competition is open to all primary 6/7 and secondary 1/2 pupils in Aberdeen schools. School teams will consist of up to 5 pupils and schools can enter as many teams as they wish.

The competition will be to find the answers to the questions attached to this letter and present the answers on a poster. Pupils can use all available sources to find the answers and supplementary information. The criteria used for judging will be correct answers, innovative design and incorporation of supplementary information such as articles, photographs, diagrams etc.

A panel of people involved in international activities will judge the posters and the prize giving will take place in the conference room in Summerhill from 4 to 6pm on the 9th. May. The winning team will receive a digital camera for the school and the individual pupils from the winning team will receive a gift voucher for ICT equipment. The prizes are donated by RM, our ICT provider. For catering numbers, it is requested that schools intimate their intention to attend along with the number of teams by Friday 28th April.

Entry posters must be handed in to Summerhill reception by Friday 5th May.

EUROPE DAY 2006 Competition

  • Which was the first European country to host the Football World Cup? Give the country, the year, the winner and a picture of a famous building associated with that country.

  • Make a map of Europe and mark on it the 14 European teams participating in the 2006 finals. Mark the capital cities of each country and their national flag.

  • The winners used to be presented with the ‘Jules Rimet’ trophy. Who was Jules Rimet and what happened to the trophy in 1966?

  • The last time Scotland reached the finals was in France 1998. Find a photograph of the Scottish captain that year and put a speech bubble from his mouth with a sentence in French.

  • Spain hosted the finals in 1982. Who won that year? Spain is also a popular holiday destination. Write a sentence and show pictures to show why it is good to go on holiday to Spain.

  • When and where is the next Women’s Football World Cup? (It is not in Europe)

  • In 1966 the World Cup was held in England. England beat Germany in the final after a goal that has been argued about ever since. At the end of the match an English commentator came out with a phrase that has become famous. What is it and who first said it?

  • Draw a map of Germany and mark on it the venues for this year’s competition.
